Liverpool hero Luis Suarez: What I really think about nearly joining Arsenal

Luis Suarez
The Barcelona striker plays at the Emirates tonight (7.45pm) in the first leg of his side's Champions League last-16 tie with Arsenal.

And ahead of Barca's clash with the Gunners, Suarez has discussed interest from Arsene Wenger.

Wenger famously tried to sign the Uruguay international by making Liverpool a £40,000,001 offer in 2013, which he thought would activate a release clause.

But the Reds refused to do business with Arsenal and Suarez eventually moved to Barcelona the following summer for £75million.

And Suarez told Express Sport: "It's inevitable that people will talk about them trying to sign me, with us facing them in Europe.

"They are a big club, but it would have been very difficult to play for any team other than Liverpool in England.

"Barcelona was the right choice for me. Yes I have won the treble in my first season, but also my family are very happy in the city. Barcelona was the only choice for me, life is good."

Suarez revealed that a chat with former Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard was key in his decision to snub Arsenal.

"Arsenal's interest in me was very public," the 29-year-old added.

"I don't think it is any secret.

"I had a private conversation with Stevie after training, and he told me to give Liverpool another season, and wait for Barcelona.

"Looking back now it is one of the most important conversations of my life, but that is Stevie, he was a captain who was always ready to give his players advice."
